Intellectual Property Costs

Intellectual Property Costs

For UK & international corporations, other substantial organisations, and including SME’s, we normally establish individually tailored service, reporting and charging arrangements. Much of our work for such clients concerns UK and European patent prosecution, opposition, appeal and portfolio support. Please contact us to discuss arrangements appropriate to your organisation.

For other clients, the following figures provide a general indication of the likely cost of preparing and filing UK patent, trade mark and registered design applications.

Our charging arrangements

Our standard attorney rate is £330 per hour plus VAT with minimum time segments of 15 minutes. For defined projects, particularly when acting for a new client, we will normally discuss the work required and provide a specific quotation before substantive work begins.

Where work has not been included within an agreed quotation or fixed fee, it is charged according to the time spent. This includes telephone calls, video meetings, discussions, correspondence and other ad hoc advice.

UK patent applications

Our professional fees for preparing and filing a UK patent application are typically between £2,000 and £6,000 plus VAT. UK Intellectual Property Office fees are presently £405 as of April 2026 where the application, search and substantive examination fees are paid online.

The cost depends principally upon the technical and legal complexity of the invention and the amount of work required to describe it properly. A relatively straightforward mechanical invention will generally cost less to prepare than an invention involving advanced electronics, software, chemistry or several interacting technical systems.

The quoted range is intended only as an initial guide. Before accepting instructions, we normally discuss the invention with the applicant and provide a project-specific quotation with a substantially narrower cost range. Typically, +/- £400.

The cost of prosecuting an application after filing depends upon the objections raised by the Patent Office and cannot usually be predicted reliably at the outset. Subsequent prosecution work is therefore normally quoted or charged separately. Again, we will confirm our professional fees, and only undertake any action with formal client instruction.

UK trade mark applications

We normally recommend an initial trade mark review before filing. This considers the likely registrability of the proposed mark, the appropriate classes of goods and services and potentially relevant earlier rights.

Our usual professional fee for this preliminary review is £330 plus VAT.

Our professional fee for preparing and filing the resulting UK trade mark application is ordinarily £165 plus VAT. The UK Intellectual Property Office fee is currently £205 for the first class and £60 for each additional class.

UK registered designs

Our professional fee for preparing and filing up to ten UK registered design applications is £500 plus VAT. The current UK Intellectual Property Office fee for an online application containing up to ten designs is £85.

Registered designs can provide valuable protection, but the protection afforded by any individual registration is generally defined relatively closely by the representations filed. Where a product may be produced in different forms, we therefore commonly recommend filing a number of variant designs, with up to ten designs often providing a commercially useful portfolio. A tailored proposal can be provided based on your IP needs.

Initial consultation and funding arrangements

We commonly offer a free initial consultation, particularly in relation to a potential patent application. The purpose of that consultation is to understand the proposed work, identify the appropriate next step and, where possible, provide a specific quotation. More extensive technical or legal advice will be chargeable.

Patent Outsourcing Limited does not undertake intellectual property work under “no win, no fee”, conditional fee or success-based funding arrangements. Clients must therefore be able to fund the agreed professional and official fees as they arise.

All figures are stated exclusive of VAT unless indicated otherwise and are correct at the time of writing. Professional charges and official fees may change from time to time. A specific quotation and the applicable terms of engagement will govern any work undertaken.
